Kinderhook is the band.Ken Schalhoub talks with people at the 1981 Middlesex County Fair. "Questions on the Street" queries residents about township proposals on the Wheelabrator Frye Garbage facility and the expansion of the Municipal Complex.

Internet Safety

The Internet has opened up a world of information for every member of the family. But that window on the world comes with pitfalls and dangers, especially for the young.

EBTV will televise an informative presentation by East Brunswick Police Department Detective Kevin Zebro on how to keep your family safe at the computer. The hour-long program will be shown March 13-April 15 as follows: Tuesdays, 3 p.m.; Wednesdays, 9 p.m.; and Sundays, 4 p.m.

Internet predators can pose a physical threat to the well-being of children who are unaware of the true identities of the people they “meet” in cyberspace. Detective Zebro will outline steps parents can take to take better control of the time their children spend online and reduce the chances of their being victimized.

EBTV's Candidates' Forum is hosted by Tim Vercellotti, of Rutgers University's Eagleton Institute of Politics. The reporters are: Phil Hartman, Editorial Page Editor for The Home News & Tribune; Mike Pavlichko, Anchor/Reporter for WCTC Radio; and Vincent Todaro, Reporter for The Sentinel.

AVID Upgrade Enhances Programming

Here's some fun news from EBTV.... Four years ago we went from a linear editing system (tape to tape - very slow and cumbersome) to a nonlinear digital editing system (an entirely different process!). We purchased an Avid Express system, because we understood it to be among the most reliable, robust, and versatile of the editing systems available.

Yesterday we had some new drives installed, which gave us more than six times the storage capacity we had before. So, we're back in business, and will debut a new This Week in East Brunswick Thursday. This week's show features Governor Jon Corzine's visit to the East Brunswick Senior Center to sign a new prescription bill; a tour of the art on exhibit at the library with Sue Robinson; and a visit to Lory's Lakeside Restaurant with Chris Shirley. Help Wanted at EBTV

Do you recognize this? It's a current slide from the EBTV Community Bulletin Board. EBTV's Community Bulletin Board Coordinator will be leaving us at the end of August, and we are seeking a new Coordinator. The position pays $12 per hour, and calls for 12 hours per week. The hours are flexible, but the Coordinator must come in regularly at least three times per week to update the bulletin board.

This is a really fun job, if you are a creative person with an eye for detail. You must be PowerPoint savvy and have a home computer. You must also be able to see EBTV Channel 3 at your house, so that you can confirm your work from home. And you must be willing to program "emergency announcements" for the township, like "school closings" due to snow. (You'd get those calls between 5 and 6 a.m. and program them from home.) You would be working independently most of the time (creating and editing announcements), but you'd also be talking on the phone and in person to all the people who use the bulletin board (customer service skills are important).

Many moons ago, this was my first job at EBTV. Since then, we've been fortunate to have had a number of talented and dedicated individuals coordinate the bulletin board. If serving the community and being in the middle of things appeals to you, and you're looking for creative part-time work in a great environment (The Library) - this may be the job for you.

Alliance PSA Winners Announced!

Winners of the EBTV PSA (Public Service Announcement) Contest sponsored by the Alliance for the Prevention of Alcoholism & Drug Abuse were announced June 14. Contest entries were accepted from East Brunswick teenagers, and focused on substance abuse prevention. Scripts and fully produced PSAs were accepted.

The two winning entries were "Drunken Family," produced by Nancy Young, Mike Buszczak, and Jessica Leff; and "Family Album," produced by Liza Gomelski, Jillian Alexander, and Samantha Berdoff. All are students in Ms. Lynne Elson's class, "The Art of Creating TV & Film," at Churchill Junior High School.

Judging was extremely difficult this year, because there were so many exceptionally good entries. We received 25 entries. This was the first year that finished PSAs were accepted (in addition to scripts on paper), and the judges were amazed at the sophistication and quality of the PSAs. Because it was the first year we accepted finished PSAs, it was a real learning experience for us. Unfortunately, one of the things we discovered eliminated quite a few excellent entries: PSAs that showed teens appearing to do drugs or drink alcohol had a very distressing effect on the adults judging them. As soon as we saw that sort of drama, we knew that we did not want to televise it on EBTV. Next year, on the application form for the contest, we will state clearly that no entries should show people appearing to do drugs or alcohol. I apologise to the students who entered the contest this year with PSAs that were eliminated for this reason. I also strongly encourage these producers to enter the contest next year, because it's clear that they have a lot of talent and skill.

EBTV will televise the winning PSAs, and interviews with the producers and Ms. Lynne Elson on This Week in East Brunswick on June 22. We will also televise runners-up (those that do not show teens appearing to do drugs or alcohol) in the evenings, throughout the summer.

Congratulations to the winners, and to everyone who participated - you really did an outstanding job! Special thanks to Ms. Elson, whose creativity, enthusiasm, and support of her students made this a very successful cooperative enterprise between the Alliance, the township, and the schools.

On the History Trail

On the History Trail debuts on EBTV in June. Host Mark Nonestied promises an "Indiana Jones-esque tour" of our local historical attractions. On the first edition, he explores the East Brunswick Museum from top to bottom. Future shows may focus on the history of Route 18, Edgeboro Landfill back to the 1700's, and the historic rock carvings along the shore of Lawrence Brook. "Encore E.B." Debuts on EBTV

In February EBTV premiered a "new" show, called "ENCORE E.B." Each month, we'll rerun a favorite show from the past. March's edition is the first ever episode of "For Arts' Sake," hosted by Dolly Vasta. Taped in October 1982, the show focuses on the opening of the original Playhouse 22, home of the East Brunswick Community Players. With Playhouse 22's opening in its new location soon to be announced, we thought this would be a timely and interesting look at the origins of the group.

Dolly interviews the major players in the creation of Playhouse 22, inlcuding her husband, Joe Vasta, Elliott Taubenslag, and John Runyon. "Encore E.B." will be televised in March, every Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. and every Thursday at 8 p.m.
